Designing and Making Posters

postersPoster design is one of the more challenging aspects of promotional literature, as you only have a small space in which to put across your information, and it must be clear and succinct enough that the main points can be communicated in just a glance.

The balance between images and text must be carefully considered, as both must be large enough to be seen for a distance of up to 15 meters away, and both must work together to attract passer-by’s, without either one overwhelming or detracting from the other.

Here are five main points that you should consider when designing posters:

  1. Keep it simple and restrict the content on your poster as much as you can (image, background design and text).
  2. Arrange the main points (special offer, company logo, product image etc) so that they are the largest and most obvious sections of the poster. Any other necessary information can be smaller and displayed nearly the bottom, or to the sides.
  3. Display – consider where the poster will be displayed and adapt your design to suit these surroundings. If it is going to be displayed with a lot of other posters, check these out first if you can and design your poster so that it is different and so stand out more.
  4. Colour Scheme – colours that match or enhance each other provide more impact, chaotic colour schemes just look confusing and put people off.
  5. Modern – unless you have a particular need to create a period or old fashioned design, make sure your poster is modern and the current style.

When it comes time to making your poster, think about how much you want to spend and how many you want to print. There are a whole host of top quality online printers now offering some great deals on poster printing, which have a number of options for you to choose from to enhance your design such as high-quality, full colour gloss finish or high-quality 100% recycled matte finish. PS Print offer a good range of poster selections at low prices, and provide a useful free sample kit, to help you choose the printing and paper options that are best for you.
