Design affects emotion. This is why people often say that making a first impression is important. Is your design giving off the right impression?
The design of your site inspires emotions in visitors. For some it inspires the idea of security, and for others the idea of fun. Different emotions occur with different colors and images. However, how does a design influence the webmaster? Could it be that there is a significant effect on your productivity?

When you’re at your desk, do you feel more productive when your desk is messy and covered in papers, or when your desk is clean? The way your desk looks affects how productive you feel. The same principle applies to your website design.
Does your design inspire you to produce more content? If the answer is “no,” then it may be time for a redesign. Your blog, forum, or website design should inspire you to improve and build upon your content and your product. The design is the wrapping, and if you don’t like your wrapping, you’ll probably respond negatively to doing productive work.
This is the reason that having a branded design is important. Your site design represents your vision, personality, and goals for the future. If your design doesn’t reflect those things, then why continue to use it? Your web design should inspire in you the proper emotions to keep going.

The design should be secondary. I’m sorry but first and foremost you should focus on content. If the design of your website is too busy you might feel like you don’t need to put as much work into the content. And that’s a mistake – unless you’re writing for 13-year old girls your readers are coming for content NOT for pretty pictures.
