How to Get Started with Website Design

guide

There is a time when designers are born. You decide that you have creativity, vision, and a flair for learning new things. So how do you begin your epic journey into making hundreds from designs? (Or perhaps just doing it to save money.) Well, this series is going to tell you, step-by-step, how to become an awesome website designer.

Before We Begin: Self Evaluation

Do you have what it takes to be a world class designer?

Designing for the online community is something that just anyone can do. But a great designer can come from anyone! (Ratatouille) So if you think you have what it takes to learn some real skills, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you mind spending hours working on a theme?
  • Do you have a good eye for color?
  • Do you understand structure and usability?
  • Are you overly defensive?
  • Do you like to learn new things and apply them?

You may think you can answer “yes” to all of these questions easily, but there will be times when the answer is a blatant “no way!” Knowing whether or not you’re in it for the long haul is important.

Where Do I Start?

How do I get started on building website themes?

The first thing you need to do is go out and learn your stuff. Get an HTML and CSS phrasebook and have a good working knowledge of tags, css code (easiest to learn), and how they work together. In the next post we’ll begin with the first basic step in designing: figuring out your concept.

:D , learning CSS and HTML alone can already takes up some beginner a lot of time. That doesn’t even include the PHP for dynamic website.

I think that being passion is what it takes to be a web designer, as long he can differentiate color, experience and viewing a lot other designer works will help too.

You need to be able to objectively evaluate yourself. If you’re going to drop the idea of designing your own website after 20 hours of work it’s 20 hours you won’t get back. You’d be better off outsourcing this work to someone.
